HDMI and DVI cables, connectors, and assemblies are significant export contributors to the world market. Mainland China alone accounts for about 15 percent to 20 percent of total world shipments for HDMI and DVI products. It also contributes 20 percent of total shipments for all DVI connectors.
At present, HDMI and DVI cable and connector makers do not specialize in these product lines, and only a few are dedicated HDMI cable and assembly makers.
Most makers have been giving more attention to these two product lines in 2007, especially toward HDMI connectors and cables. In mainland China alone, which is on the lower end of the HDMI spectrum, shipments show signs of growth at rates of 30 percent — and possibly by as much as 50 percent — in the coming years.
Manufacturers in Greater China produce a wide range of low-end to high-end products for both HDMI and DVI segments, but are adopting more sophisticated production technologies and acquiring product certifications that attest to the quality of their products. Makers of HDMI products, in particular, aspire to become regular members of the HDMI Alliance and certified "HDMI Adopters," which in mid-2007 numbered just over 600 all over the world. HDMI licensing offers benefits to accredited companies in terms of technological/R&D support, although non-licensed manufacturers can still manufacture and market HDMI-type products.
There are strong indications that production volume and the level of product adoption for HDMI are on a steep upward climb, while DVI output is in dramatic decline. Nonetheless, there is strong big-brand backing for both standards, and competition between the rising HDMI market and the more established DVI market remains very fierce.
In Greater China, makers in the HDMI segment are observing the rate of consumer adoption of the HDMI standard, especially in the high definition TVs (HDTVs) and monitors market, and adjusting their yearly production plans accordingly. DVI production is also far from phase-out, and maintains its dominance primarily in the computer market
