HDMI and DVI cables, connectors, and assemblies are significant export contributors to the world market. Mainland China alone accounts for about 15 percent to 20 percent of total world shipments for HDMI and DVI products.
Most makers have been giving more attention to these two product lines in 2007, especially toward HDMI connectors and cables.
About 100 makers of HDMI and DVI products are based in mainland China, gathered in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and in large cities like Shanghai. Over half are located in the Pearl River Delta area.
Taiwan has a small base of very strong, well established makers, while the rest are locally owned small- and medium-scale enterprises. They are mostly located in the Greater Taipei area, in Hsichih, Hsien Tien, Chungho and Taoyuan.
Locally owned mainland companies mostly produce HDMI and DVI cables, while most of the foreign-owned companies produce HDMI and DVI connectors.
Taiwan makers are also more engaged in HDMI and DVI connector production than locally-owned mainland suppliers, with high capabilities in precision mold-making and product testing.
Hong Kong has about 15 suppliers of mid-range or high-end HDMI and DVI cables and assemblies. HDMI and DVI connectors are generally considered secondary or tertiary products in terms of total sales and volume shipments.
The following are some of the key findings in the report: • Makers focused on HDMI cable assemblies expect HDMI to push DVI aside as the primary interface in new A/V equipment. Makers plan to continue producing DVI cables to support older generation products.
• More and more manufacturers in Greater China are becoming HDMI Adopters. Last year's reduction in HDMI annual fees is expected to encourage more mainland makers to register.
• For HDMI connectors, prices fell 15 percent in 2006 due to competition, and may fall another 10 percent in 2007, while HDMI cable and assembly prices are falling 5 percent. Lower demand and high production overhead are also causing DVI cable and assembly prices to fall.
• Export orientation varies by area. At present, only 30 percent to 40 percent of total output from the mainland is exported. Exports are increasing, however, as HDMI, becomes more widely adopted, especially in the HDTV and monitor segments. Taiwan is already 90 percent or more export oriented, as is Hong Kong.
